Angel food cake is a type of cake that is popular in the United States, but it is not traditionally associated with England. The cake is made with egg whites, sugar, and flour, and has a light and fluffy texture. It is believed to have originated in the United States in the late 19th century, and there is no evidence to suggest that it has any historical connection to England. However, it is possible that the cake has become popular in England in recent years due to the global spread of American cuisine.
Here is a recipe for angel food cake that you can try:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup cake flour
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 12 large egg whites, at room temperature
- 1 tsp cream of tartar
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).
Sift the cake flour and 1/2 cup of the sugar together in a bowl and set aside.
In an enormous blending bowl, beat the egg whites with an electric blender on medium speed until they become foamy.
Add the cream of tartar and salt to the egg whites and continue to beat until soft peaks form.
Gradually add the remaining 1 cup of sugar to the egg whites, a little at a time, while continuing to beat on medium-high speed until stiff peaks form.
Gently fold in the sifted flour mixture, a little at a time, using a rubber spatula.
Fold in the vanilla extract until everything is evenly combined.
Pour the batter into an ungreased 10-inch (25cm) tube pan, spreading it evenly.
Run a blade through the player to eliminate any air pockets.
Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the cake is golden brown and springs back when gently pressed.
Remove the cake from the oven and invert the pan immediately onto a cooling rack.
Allow the cake to cool totally prior to eliminating it from the dish.
Serve the angel food cake topped with whipped cream and fresh fruit if desired. Enjoy!
