Yakgwa (약과)

Here's a traditional recipe for Yakgwa (약과) that you can try making at home:

Ingredients:

For the dough:

  1. 1 cup all-purpose flour
  2. 1/4 cup rice flour
  3. 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  4. 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  5. 2 tablespoons honey
  6. 2 tablespoons ginger juice
  7. 1/4 teaspoon salt

For the honey syrup:

  1. 1/2 cup honey
  2. 1/4 cup water
  3. 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon powder

For frying:Vegetable oil for deep frying

For garnish:Pine nuts

Instructions:

In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, rice flour, sesame oil, vegetable oil, honey, ginger juice, and salt. Mix well until a smooth dough forms.

Cover the dough with plastic wrap and let it rest for about 30 minutes to 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld.

Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, combine the honey, water, and cinnamon powder for the honey syrup. Heat over low heat, stirring occasionally, until the honey is fully dissolved. Remove from heat and set aside.

After the dough has rested, take small portions of the dough and roll it into small balls or discs, about 1 inch in diameter.

Heat the vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or wok over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully add the dough balls or discs in batches and fry them until they turn golden brown, turning occasionally for even frying.

Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried dough from the oil and drain excess oil on paper towels.

Dip the fried dough in the prepared honey syrup while they are still hot, coating them evenly.

Place the coated Yakgwa on a serving plate and garnish with pine nuts on top.

Allow the Yakgwa to cool and absorb the honey syrup for about 30 minutes before serving.

Enjoy the delicious and aromatic Yakgwa as a traditional Korean dessert!

Note: Yakgwa can be stored in an airtight container for up to a week.
