Bungeoppang (붕어빵) is a popular Korean street food that is shaped like a fish and typically filled with a sweet filling. The name "bungeoppang" translates to "carp bread" in English, as the pastry is usually made to resemble a carp, which is a type of fish commonly found in Korea.
Here's a recipe for making Bungeoppang (붕어빵) cake at home:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- Filling of your choice (red bean paste, sweetened chestnut paste, custard, etc.)
Instructions:
In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and vanilla extract.
Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and whisk until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
Stir in the melted butter and mix until the batter is smooth.
Heat a Bungeoppang mold or pan over medium heat and lightly grease it with cooking spray or butter.
Pour about 1 tablespoon of batter into each fish-shaped cavity of the mold.
Place a small amount of filling (such as red bean paste or any other filling of your choice) in the center of each cavity on top of the batter.
Pour another tablespoon of batter on top of the filling to cover it completely.
Close the mold tightly and cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side, until the cake turns golden brown and crispy.
Carefully remove the Bungeoppang cakes from the mold using a fork or a wooden skewer.
Allow the cakes to cool for a few minutes before serving.
Enjoy your homemade Bungeoppang (붕어빵) cakes as a delicious Korean snack or dessert!
Note: Bungeoppang molds or pans can be found in Korean grocery stores or online. If you don't have a Bungeoppang mold, you can also use a similar fish-shaped mold or even a regular waffle iron to make a similar shape. Just adjust the amount of batter and filling accordingly to fit the size of your mold.
